Norseman the Horse

Meet Norseman. That’s right, this is the horse that started it all.

One crisp winter’s night in 1894 prospector Laurie Sinclair tethered his horse to a tree outside his brother’s tent at a site not far from Norseman. Legend has it that in the morning he found his horse lame, and on inspecting it found a sizeable chunk of gold-bearing quartz stuck in its hoof.

Laurie’s horse was named Norseman, and on August 13 that year he and his partner John Allsop registered the claim of the same name – and the rest, as they say, is history.

You can find the statue of Norseman the Horse in Marks Park, on the corner of Roberts and Ramsay Street
