Granite and Woodlands Discovery Trail
Stretching over 300km between Hyden and Norseman, the Granite and Woodlands Discovery Trail offers a unique journey through diverse landscapes, rich natural features and local history.
The trail includes 16 interpretive sites, many featuring walking trails, picnic areas and scenic lookouts, making it ideal for exploring at your own pace.
The road is unsealed gravel. Google Maps may depict the Hyden-Norseman Road as a shortcut. Due to isolated weather events and the extended length of this road, surface conditions can deteriorate rapidly. Travel only with vehicles equipped for rough, unsealed terrain.

Highlights Along the Trail
The Gemfields
Located just 10.4km from Norseman along Mort Harslett Drive, this area allows visitors to fossick for agate and opalite on land generously donated to the Shire.
Wave Rock
Situated 5km from Hyden, this iconic natural formation resembles a breaking ocean wave — a striking “coastal” feature in the heart of the outback.
The Breakaways
A popular free camping area with toilet facilities available. Particularly beautiful during wildflower season, it offers a peaceful setting to camp under the stars surrounded by vibrant natural colour.
